Fatty liver disease

Your liver is the largest organ inside your body. It helps your body to digest food, store energy, and remove poisons. Fatty liver disease is when fat builds up in your liver. There are two main types:

  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Alcoholic fatty liver disease is also called alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Symptoms of fatty liver disease

NAFLD and alcoholic fatty liver disease are usually silent diseases with few or no symptoms. If you have symptoms, you feel tired or discomfort in the upper right side of your abdomen.

Who is at risk for fatty liver disease?

  • Have type 2 diabetes and prediabetes
  • obesity
  • Age factor
  • Are Hispanic, followed by non-Hispanic whites.
  • who Have high levels of fats in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Take certain drugs
  • Have certain metabolic disorders
  • rapid weight loss
  • Have certain infections, such as hepatitis C
  • Have been exposed to some toxins

How is fatty liver disease diagnosed?

Because NAFLD causes no symptoms in most cases, it frequently comes to medical attention. This can happen if your liver looks unusual on ultrasound or an abnormal liver enzyme test.

  • Blood tests
  • Imaging procedures
  • Liver tissue examination

What are the treatments for fatty liver disease?

The first line of treatment is usually weight loss through a combination of a healthy diet and exercise. Losing weight addresses the conditions that contribute to NAFLD. Ideally, a loss of 10% of body weight is desirable, but improvement in risk factors can become apparent if you lose even 3% to 5% of your starting weight. Weight-loss surgery is also an option for those who need to lose much weight.

For those with cirrhosis due to NASH, liver transplantation may be an option.

  • Potential future treatments
The Food and Drug Administration has approved no drug treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, but a few drugs are being studied with promising results.
  • Clinical trials
Testing new treatments, interventions, and tests to prevent, detect, treat, or manage this condition.
  • Lifestyle and home remedies
    • Lose weight.
    • Choose a healthy diet.
    • Exercise and be more active.
    • Control your diabetes.
    • Lower your cholesterol.
    • Protect your liver.
